How to Install a Downspout Diverter
- Set the rain barrel in place by a guttering downspout. Make sure the rain barrel is level and secure.
- Mark the downspout at the level of the barrel top. Measure 3 inches down from the first measurement on the downspout and make a second mark.
- Using a hack saw or tin snippers, remove the 3 inch section of downspout within the marks.
- Slip the square portion of the downspout diverter up into the upper portion of the cut downspout and maneuver the lower pipe on the diverter onto the lower portion of the downspout. Sometimes it is necessary to loosen the downspout securing straps to complete this action.
- If you choose to secure the diverter to the side of the house, make marks on the house through the keyholes found on the back of the diverter. Remove the diverter. Use the appropriate fasteners for the house siding material and secure to the wall. Replace the diverter and slip the keyholes on the fasteners.
- Attach a flexible ¾ (outside diameter) hose into the grommet on the diverter.
- Cut the hose to length and insert it into the rainbarrel.
